Government strengthens child online protection rules
The government has set the minimum age at 15 for creating and maintaining accounts on social media platforms, introducing new measures aimed at strengthening child protection online.
The announcement on social media age limit was made by President Nikos Christodoulides, who said the policy focuses on protecting children, supporting families and ensuring platforms enforce age rules more effectively.
Child protection a top priority
Christodoulides stressed that protecting children in the digital environment remains a top priority for his administration.
He said Cyprus ranks among EU member states that will immediately implement the European technical proposal for online age verification.
Digital Citizen app integration
The government plans to integrate the system within the national “Digital Citizen” application later this year.
The initiative will allow users to verify age more securely when accessing digital platforms.
New legal framework planned
A new bill will define the scope of application, set obligations for age verification and establish penalties for non-compliance.
It will also include transitional provisions to support smooth implementation across platforms and users.
