Where to find on-call doctors on public holidays and weekends

Date:

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) has announced the contact arrangements for on-call Personal Doctors under Cyprus’ General Healthcare System (GeSY) over the weekends of October 10–11, 17–18 and 24–25, as well as the public holiday on October 28, 2026.

The on-call services will operate from 11am to 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Their telephone contact centres will begin operating 30 minutes before the services open.

The HIO said contact details for on-call Personal Doctors in each district will be updated regularly and published on the official GeSY website, www.gesy.org.cy, as well as on the organisation’s official social media accounts.

Who can use the on-call GP services?

The services are available to adults and children who are beneficiaries of GeSY and need urgent medical care during weekends and public holidays.

Examples of conditions that may require an appointment include the sudden onset of worrying symptoms, severe and sudden pain, worsening symptoms linked to a serious chronic illness, and a high fever accompanied by other symptoms.

However, the HIO stressed that the services are not intended for existing medical conditions that can be managed through a regular appointment, repeat prescriptions, referrals to other GeSY services or situations in which patients have simply been unable to find time to visit their Personal Doctor.

Appointments must be arranged by phone

Beneficiaries must contact the on-call Personal Doctor service in their district by telephone during its operating hours.

After the patient’s health concern has been assessed, an appointment will be arranged for the same day, within the service’s operating hours.

The HIO emphasised that the services operate by appointment only, to ensure patients can be managed efficiently.
