Violations and unrest in buffer zone

Tensions and violations by the Turkish Cypriot side were reported in the buffer zone in Pergamos, involving “police”, the occupying army, and UNFICYP.

According to information obtained by CNA, the United Nations attempted today to prevent the illegal entry of “police” into the buffer zone, resulting in reinforcements being called in and tensions escalating in the area.

UN patrols and military presence

At each static United Nations patrol point, there are also static patrols by the “police”. A UN helicopter also carried out flyovers in the area.

The occupying army reportedly deployed approximately 15 tanks in the region.

Flag raised and forces mobilised

At a specific point in the buffer zone, a Turkish flag was raised. Dozens of “police” officers in civilian clothing also arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile, at various points, the Bases authorities deployed police forces to enhance supervision in areas under their responsibility.

UN calls for calm

In an update, UNFICYP stated that the situation remains calm today and that it continues to patrol the area while closely monitoring developments.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNFICYP, Khassim Diagne, called for calm and restraint, urging all sides to respect the UN mandate.
