Dam levels reach 33% capacity; still “not satisfactory”

Date:

Dam storage improves compared to last year

Cyprus’ dam levels currently stand at 33.9%, storing 98.7 million cubic metres of water, according to Marios Chatzikostis, Chief Technical Engineer at the Water Development Department. While higher than the 24.1% recorded at the same time last year, officials warn that the levels are still not sufficient to ensure long-term security.

Recent inflows boost reserves

The total inflow over the past three days reached 3.75 million cubic metres, with accumulated inflows since 1 October totalling 81 million cubic metres. Chatzikostis highlighted that March brought the highest monthly inflows, calling it “a very rare phenomenon” that exceeded the rainfall of previous winter months.

Authorities urge careful water use

Despite improved dam levels, Chatzikostis stressed the importance of careful water usage. “We must always be very cautious,” he said, noting that droughts are frequent and can worsen over time. Officials credit the strong inflows since October with mitigating water shortages this year.
