Rubio arrives in France for G7 talks on Iran, Ukraine and security

Rubio arrives amid Iran tensions

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in France on Friday to attend the G7 foreign ministers meeting, with discussions expected to focus on tensions surrounding the war against Iran. This marks Rubio’s first overseas trip since the outbreak of conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran on 28 February.

Pressure from European allies

According to the French news agency AFP, Rubio may face pressure from European and other allies regarding Washington’s strategy for the ongoing conflict, which has contributed to rising global energy prices.

Meeting at Vaux-de-Cernay Abbey

The second day of talks is being held at the Vaux-de-Cernay Abbey, just outside Paris. The meeting follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to extend the deadline for potential strikes on Iranian energy facilities until 6 April. Trump commented on Truth Social that talks with Iran, the details of which remain unclear, are “going very well.”

Ukraine also on the agenda

The G7 meeting brings together Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. European ministers emphasised that the Ukraine crisis should not be sidelined while discussions on Iran continue.

Press briefing expected

The summit is scheduled to conclude with a press conference by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot at 15:00.
