Iran says armed forces will fight until “complete victory”

Date:

Iran issued a strong military warning, saying its armed forces will continue fighting until “complete victory,” according to statements from the country’s top military command.

Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, spokesman for the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, made the remarks after US President Donald Trump said negotiations between Washington and Tehran were underway.

Iran denied that any direct talks are taking place, although its foreign minister has held discussions with regional counterparts.

“Iran’s powerful armed forces are proud, victorious and steadfast in defending Iran’s integrity, and this path will continue until complete victory,” Iranian state television quoted Aliabadi as saying.

He did not define what “complete victory” would mean, but the statement appeared aimed at warning against concessions in any potential negotiations with the United States.

New security chief after airstrike

Iran also announced a major change in its national security leadership following a deadly airstrike that killed senior official Ali Larijani.

State television said Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been appointed secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

Zolghadr holds the rank of brigadier general and previously served as secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council.

The appointment comes as tensions in the region remain high, with Iran, the United States and Israel involved in an increasingly volatile confrontation.
