Paphos tragedy: 44 year old man dead and 32 year old woman in ICU after charcoal fumes

Date:

A tragedy unfolded on Monday morning in Paphos District, where a 44 year old man from Nepal was found dead, while a 32 year old woman of the same nationality was hospitalised in serious condition after inhaling dangerous fumes.

According to the Cyprus Police, the incident occurred at around 09:45 when a 59 year old Greek Cypriot restaurant owner in the area of Petra tou Romiou found his 44 year old foreign employee and a woman unconscious in a basement area of the restaurant, which the man used as living quarters.

Police officers from the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department and the Kouklia Police Station rushed to the scene along with an ambulance. Paramedics confirmed that the 44 year old man was already dead.

The woman, later identified as a 32 year old Nepali national working as a domestic helper in a village of the Paphos district, was transported to Paphos General Hospital with serious respiratory problems and is being treated in the intensive care unit.

During examinations at the scene, authorities found a rectangular metal container with burning charcoal inside the room, apparently used for heating. The fumes that accumulated in the enclosed space are believed to have caused the man’s death, while the woman lost consciousness.

The exact cause of death will be determined following a post mortem examination, while police continue to investigate the circumstances of the case.
