Man arrested after setting car on fire and assaulting police officer in Nicosia

Members of the Cyprus Police went to a residence in Nicosia at around 2 p.m. yesterday after receiving information about a 35-year-old man who was causing concern outside the property.

When a police officer attempted to arrest him, the suspect allegedly attacked the officer, striking him in the face with his hands. Additional police officers arrived at the scene and the 35-year-old was eventually subdued and arrested.

At the same time, authorities discovered a fire inside the vehicle of the 34-year-old homeowner. The blaze was extinguished by the Cyprus Fire Service, which was called to the scene.

During questioning, the 35-year-old reportedly admitted that he had set the car on fire.

The suspect has been placed in custody. The police officer who was assaulted was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he received first aid before being discharged.

Investigations are continuing by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department.
