The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has called for an end to the involvement of the British Sovereign Base Areas in military operations and for plans to install 68 new antennas in Akrotiri to be halted.
In a statement, the party called for “an end to the involvement of the British bases in military operations” and for all action towards installing 68 new antennas in the Merra area of Akrotiri to stop.
The British bases’ role in military operations
The Ecologists said they had contacted the Green Party of England and Wales to raise the issue in the UK House of Commons.
The party said it wants MPs to discuss both the presence of the British bases, which it described as a remnant of colonialism, and their alleged use as a launchpad for offensive military operations.
The status and use of the British Sovereign Base Areas has been the subject of renewed debate in Cyprus in 2026. The UK maintains sovereignty over the Akrotiri and Dhekelia areas under the 1960 agreements establishing the Republic of Cyprus.
Calls to halt antenna plans
The Ecologists also called for the planned installation of 68 new antennas in the Merra area of Akrotiri to be stopped.
The issue has prompted protests by local residents and authorities. Residents of Akrotiri protested in September against plans for up to 68 new communications antennas near the salt lake.
The British Bases administration has said the project involves modernising infrastructure and installing new equipment. It has also said that work would be subject to the required environmental process and public consultation.
Local authorities and environmental organisations have raised concerns about the potential environmental impact of the planned infrastructure, particularly given the ecological importance of the Akrotiri area.
The Ecologists’ latest statement adds the party’s opposition to the project and its call for government action.
