Given the continuing tense situation in the region and for the purposes of prevention and proper preparedness of the population, citizens are advised to remain alert so that, should it become necessary, they can take the following self-protection measures.
Specifically, if they receive a text message on their mobile phones, citizens are asked to remain calm and follow the instructions below:
- If there is a basement in their home, in a neighbouring building, or in the place where they are located, they should proceed to it immediately on foot and calmly.
- If they are inside a building that does not have a basement, they should remain inside the building, away from doors, glass surfaces and windows.
- If they are outdoors, they should move to the nearest indoor space.
- In facilities such as schools, hospitals and stadiums, the relevant emergency protocols will be implemented by the responsible personnel. Citizens are asked to avoid travelling by vehicle to these locations.
- Until further instructions are issued by the competent authorities, citizens are asked to remain in basements or indoor spaces and avoid movement in outdoor areas, whether on foot or by vehicle.
In addition, the Government, in cooperation with all telecommunications providers in Cyprus, is activating from today a messaging system to provide citizens with valid and timely information so that, when a potential security incident is being investigated, they can take the necessary measures indicated by Civil Defence in such situations.
Finally, today at around 19:00 pm, a test of this new service, introduced as a safety and public information measure by the Government, will be carried out, with a test message being sent to all mobile phone users in Cyprus.
