Erdogan–Trump phone call on Iran: De escalation and the security of Hormuz

The presidents of Turkey and the United States held a phone call against the backdrop of escalating tensions following the operation against Iran, with Ankara emphasizing the need to contain the conflict and safeguard regional stability.

The Turkish presidency announced that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Donald Trump discussed developments following the military operation against Iran.

During the call, the escalation of tensions in the region after the operation and the security of Gulf countries were the main items on the agenda.

The two leaders discussed ongoing developments aimed at preventing the conflict from spreading across the wider region and reducing risks to energy routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.

First statement from Burhanettin Duran

The Director of Communications of the Turkish presidency, Burhanettin Duran, stressed that Turkey continues its diplomatic efforts to ensure regional stability.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also confirmed the call, stating that President Trump is coordinating with allies.

Call for “common sense”

The security of Gulf states was also at the center of discussions following Iranian attacks on US bases in Bahrain and Qatar.

The future of the security architecture in the Gulf region was one of the most critical topics of the conversation.

Erdoğan stressed that all actors in the region should act with “common sense.”
