A tragic Nicosia-Limassol motorway crash occurred shortly after 7 pm on Thursday, claiming the life of 70-year-old Savvas Ioannou from Paphos, according to RIK.
Ioannou died after a passing vehicle struck him while he took part in roadworks near Moni.
Circumstances under investigation
Limassol Traffic Police chief Marios Charalambous said a 37-year-old driver hit an illuminated arrow sign placed in the right lane under circumstances still under investigation. The vehicle then struck Ioannou, who was placing cones to close the fast lane.
Police are taking statements, including from the victim’s colleagues, to clarify the exact circumstances of the crash.
Driver arrested
The 37-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and underwent alcohol and drug tests, which returned negative results. Authorities arrested him under a court warrant to facilitate the investigation.
Limassol Traffic Police continue to examine the case.
