Phedonos denies all charges, calls accusations a coordinated attack

Checks on Turkish Cypriot properties

Following allegations against the Municipality of Paphos and the suspended Mayor Phedonas Phedonos regarding Turkish Cypriot properties, the Ministry of Interior is conducting related inspections at the Turkish Cypriot Properties Management Service. A Ministry team is expected to visit Paphos to review property leases, including those involving the Mayor.

Ministry outlines broader inspections

General Director of the Ministry, Ellikos Elia, told CNA that the Ministry is carrying out a campaign of random checks on Turkish Cypriot property contracts, not only in Paphos but across Cyprus. “The inspections aim to inform the Curator whether anything was done outside the regulations,” he said, noting ongoing efforts to rationalise property management.

Past administrative review

Elia highlighted that a previous administrative investigation took place in Paphos during 2021–2022 following earlier complaints, resulting in recommendations to the Mayor regarding his role in property leases. He added that similar inspections have addressed issues in the Mackenzie area, including revisions of unusually low rental rates.

Suspended mayor responds

Phedonas Phedonos denied all allegations, calling the attacks against him “orchestrated.” He stressed that he has not been questioned by the Police and linked the accusations to political motives and efforts to distract from the “videogate” scandal and campaign financing issues involving the President and the First Lady’s Independent Social Support Body.

In a public statement on social media, he said: “I have committed none of the offences being circulated to damage me. I urge the authorities to investigate fully and charge me only with evidence so that justice can decide. If they attempt a public trial against me, I am prepared to respond fully to all allegations. This is an organised and deliberate attack against me and society.”

Ongoing Ministry oversight

Elia emphasised that the Ministry of Interior examines every complaint seriously and acts within the law. He noted that collective bodies, including municipal councils, must respect laws, regulations, and administrative principles. “It is essential they understand and follow proper procedures when convening and making decisions,” he said.
