Five in prison for armed drug gang

Date:

Five of nine suspects arrested by the Cyprus Anti-Drug Squad (YKAN) in Larnaca on Saturday have been remanded in custody for eight days, the Larnaca District Court confirmed. The men, aged 39, 23, 23, 19, and 19, appeared before the court on Sunday.

Charges under investigation

The five suspects face seven charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal supply and possession of Class A and B controlled drugs, possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, offences under the Prohibition and Combatting of Money Laundering Law, and participation in a criminal organisation.

One of the 19-year-olds additionally faces an eighth charge relating to possession of a Category B firearm.

Ongoing investigations

Separate cases have been opened for the other four suspects, and police indicated further arrests are possible in the coming days. Investigators are actively seeking the drug supplier, final recipients, and additional accomplices connected to the suspects.

Court ruling and police reasoning

The court agreed with the police that releasing the five suspects could hinder the investigation by influencing witnesses, destroying evidence, or facilitating escape abroad or to non-government-controlled areas. Testimony links the suspects to the offences, and police investigative work is ongoing. Based on these considerations, the court remanded all five men for eight days.
