Parents warn of safety risks, noise, and leaks at Makarios Hospital

Date:

The Pancyprian Association of Parents and Friends of the Paediatric Oncology Unit has expressed serious concern about ongoing renovation works at Makarios Hospital, which they say threaten the safety of hospitalised children.

The association acknowledged the need for renovations but insisted that a new, modern hospital is necessary.

Disruption and risks

Parents highlighted repeated issues despite assurances and safety protocols, including:

  1. Continuous noise affecting children’s mental health and recovery.
  2. Falling dust and debris from false ceilings, posing risks to immunocompromised patients.
  3. Water leaks onto beds, in the kitchen, and other areas of the unit.
  4. Intermittent water supply and dirty water due to pipe disturbances.

Parents shared accounts of children and staff facing daily disturbances. In some cases, broken pipes caused water to spill onto food preparation areas and medical files, while drilling noise disrupted surgeries and sleep.

Calls for action

The association called for immediate reassessment of safety measures, updates to the risk management plan, and daily strict supervision of renovation work. They emphasised that child safety is a fundamental, non-negotiable right.

Official response

OKYPY spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou said measures were taken to minimise disruption, but acknowledged some issues during floor cutting and minor water leaks. Laboratory tests confirmed no water quality issues.

The contractor received instructions to carry out heavy work after 8 a.m. and pause between 1–2 p.m., while weekends would avoid disruptive operations. Heavy works are expected to conclude by 13 February.

Political follow-up

MP Efthymios Diplaros said he would raise the concerns with the hospital’s board and, if needed, the parliamentary health committee to ensure children’s safety.

Parents remain worried about noise, safety, and hygiene, while the association stresses the need for a specialised Mother and Child hospital.
