OKYPY investigates complaint over 72-year-old’s death at Larnaca Hospital

Date:

The Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) has announced an official investigation into a complaint concerning the care of a 72-year-old patient at Larnaca General Hospital. The inquiry follows the patient’s death in the early hours of 18 January 2026.

Family raises concerns over delayed care

According to the family’s complaint, the patient, Konstantia Nikolaou, was admitted on 17 January at 16:00 with severe COVID-19 symptoms. They claim it took five hours and repeated requests before a doctor examined her, diagnosing sepsis. She was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Unit amid pressure on the hospital caused by a serious shooting incident in the city.

The family said the attending doctor assured them no relative’s presence was required. Later, they were told that necessary medications would be administered. Despite reassurances from nursing staff at 03:51 that “all is fine,” the family was informed at 04:17 that the patient had died from cardiac arrest.

Concerns over monitoring and medication

The complaint raises serious questions about patient monitoring, the functioning of vital-sign recording equipment, and timely initiation of resuscitation procedures. Relatives also claim that medications were not administered and that a water bottle beside the patient remained unopened upon their arrival.

Authorities pledge transparency and review

OKYpY confirmed the case will undergo a full and thorough investigation in line with established procedures. The organisation expressed condolences to the family and emphasised its commitment to transparency and ensuring such incidents are fully clarified.

The family has called for immediate measures to strengthen hospital staffing, ensure continuous patient monitoring, and prevent future lapses that could endanger lives.
