Meteorology Department issues wind warning

Strong winds are affecting Cyprus today, particularly coastal areas, according to a warning issued by the Department of Meteorology.

The department reports strong to very strong westerly to north-westerly winds, blowing at force 5 to 6 Beaufort and temporarily reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort. These conditions mainly affect western coastal areas and, locally, the southern and northern coasts.

Sea conditions vary, with locally rough seas along the southern coast, while western and northern waters remain rough to wavy.

Isolated rain before clearing later today

As for today’s weather, isolated showers or even a thunderstorm may occur, mainly in western and northern areas. After midday, conditions will gradually become mostly clear.

Visibility will range from good to moderate, though it may become locally reduced at times.

Afternoon and evening conditions

During the afternoon, the weather will remain mostly clear, although increased cloud cover may develop locally. Winds will continue from the south-west to north-west, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort and temporarily very strong at 6 Beaufort in windward areas.

The sea will remain slightly rough to rough in the east, rough in the south, and wavy in the west and north.

At night, conditions will stay mostly clear. Winds will turn mainly north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, though initially moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort in windward areas. The sea will remain rough in the west and north, while southern and eastern waters will gradually become slightly rough.

Temperatures will drop to 7°C inland, around 13°C along western and northern coasts, about 9°C along southern and eastern coasts, and 3°C in the higher mountains, where frost will form in sheltered areas.

Outlook for the coming days

Tomorrow, the weather will remain mostly clear. Winds will blow south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough, though initially rough in western and northern waters. Temperatures will rise to around 19°C inland and along the coast, and about 10°C in the higher mountains.

On Thursday, the weather will turn partly cloudy.

On Friday, conditions will become locally mostly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected during the afternoon.

On Saturday, the weather will remain partly cloudy, with isolated showers possible, mainly in western areas and the mountains.

Temperatures will stay above seasonal averages on Thursday, drop slightly on Friday, and rise again slightly on Saturday.
