Reports of a possible hijacking incident involving a Flydubai flight travelling from the United Arab Emirates to Israel have triggered an alert in the country.
According to the Times of Israel, the aircraft transmitted the emergency code “7500”, which is used to indicate unlawful interference or a hijacking.
The Flydubai hijacking alert prompted an immediate response as authorities sought to establish what was happening aboard the aircraft.
Aircraft turns towards Saudi Arabia
According to initial information, the aircraft made a U-turn and is now heading towards Saudi Arabian airspace.
It is expected to land shortly, after which authorities will seek to determine exactly what happened during the flight.
No further information has yet been provided about the circumstances that prompted the aircraft to transmit the 7500 code.
Israeli fighter jets scrambled
Israel responded immediately to the Flydubai hijacking alert, with Israeli Air Force fighter jets reportedly scrambled and sent towards the aircraft.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also convened an emergency meeting over the incident.
