Investigation intensifies after deadly blast
Authorities are intensifying their investigation into the Trikala factory explosion at the VIOLANTA biscuit plant, after the death toll rose to four women, with one worker previously reported missing.
The explosion and subsequent fire broke out in the early hours of Monday at the factory in Trikala, triggering a large-scale emergency response and leaving the local community in shock.
According to information so far, all four victims were found in the basement of the facility, close to one another, where investigators believe the initial explosion occurred.
LPG use under scrutiny
Early findings indicate that a powerful explosion preceded the fire, which erupted shortly before 4:00 am and destroyed part of the factory complex.
While the biscuit plant reportedly uses liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in its operations, initial inspections suggest that external LPG tanks did not show signs of damage. As a result, investigative teams are now focusing on internal areas of the factory where LPG was also in use.
Five female employees were reportedly in the basement area at the time of the explosion. Five other workers, as well as one firefighter, were taken to hospital, with authorities stating that all injured individuals are in good health.
Prior safety inspections raised concerns
Questions have also emerged regarding workplace safety at the facility. Speaking to local media, the president of the Trikala Labour Centre said inspections had been carried out at the factory in the summer of 2025, following a request by the union.
According to his statement, inspectors identified issues related mainly to emergency exits and systems designed to detect possible LPG leaks used in industrial ovens. He stressed that observations were formally recorded, adding that labour unions often face limitations in accessing facilities beyond their entrances during inspections.
Company statement
VIOLANTA issued a new statement following the tragedy, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life.
In its announcement, the company said it is experiencing “profound emotional devastation” and emphasised that its sole priority at this time is to stand by the families of the victims with respect and support.
“There are no words capable of describing the human pain caused by such a tragedy,” the statement said.
Community in shock
The explosion was reportedly heard in neighbouring villages, according to residents, while relatives of the victims gathered at the scene seeking information about their loved ones.
The bodies of the victims have been transferred to Larissa General Hospital, where post-mortem examinations and formal identification procedures are being carried out.
The cause of the Trikala factory explosion remains under investigation.
