Bill proposal for hotel fire safety law debated

Date:

DISY MP and Energy Committee Chairman Kyriacos Hatzigiannis tabled the “Regulation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (Amendment) Law of 2025”, discussed article-by-article yesterday. The hotel fire safety bill allows special temporary operating permits under strict conditions for non-compliant units, centring comprehensive fire protection plans.

Hatzigiannis stated post-session the goal addresses chronic issues with hundreds of tourist facilities operating unlicensed. The regime creates legality via special permits meeting fire safety and other national laws.

Fire Service technical oversight

Fire Service will set requirements via technical studies for effective plans including active and passive measures. Hatzigiannis rejected safety relaxation claims: “This strengthens protection, not weakens it.”

Successive annual extensions failed; the hotel fire safety bill proposal offers realistic choice between shutdowns and status quo perpetuation.

Economic and safety benefits

Committee suggestions incorporated serve public safety and national economy. Without legal framework, investments stall, devaluing assets and fostering illicit pressures.

The regulation reduces tourism sector risks by bolstering fire protection and overall facility safety.
