Residents and beachgoers in Limassol have raised concerns over possible sea pollution, following reports of suspected wastewater discharges reaching the coastline through a pipe located along the city’s seafront.
Photographs obtained by SigmaLive show a pipe discharging onto the beach, while stagnant water and accumulations of organic matter can be seen in the area before flowing into the sea.
Fears over possible wastewater discharge
Residents have expressed concerns that the discharge could involve sewage or other liquid waste originating from nearby developments or hotel facilities.
According to complaints submitted to SigmaLive, foamy water has frequently been observed in the area, prompting concerns among swimmers and visitors. Some residents claim that the presence of foam and discoloured water has discouraged both locals and tourists from using the beach.
Calls for inspections and water testing
Those raising the concerns are calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the source of the discharge and carry out water sampling and laboratory testing.
They are seeking clarification as to whether the outflow consists of stormwater runoff or wastewater that could pose risks to public health and the marine environment.
The issue has intensified concerns about sea pollution and the potential impact of land-based activities on coastal waters.
Concerns over land-based pollution
Information available to SigmaLive points to apparent human activity linked to the discharge, reinforcing longstanding concerns that a significant proportion of marine pollution originates from land-based sources.
Environmental experts have frequently highlighted that coastal pollution can result from a variety of factors, including wastewater systems, urban runoff and improper waste management practices.
Residents seek transparency
The matter is expected to be brought before the competent authorities, with residents calling for immediate answers and full transparency regarding water quality in the area.
As concerns over sea pollution continue to grow, local communities are urging officials to publish the findings of any inspections and ensure that any environmental risks are addressed without delay.
