ICE detention record – New high in immigration custody

Date:

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported a record 68,400 people in detention as of December 14, 2025, surpassing the previous peak from early December. This biweekly data update marks an all-time high for immigration custody.

The Guardian tracked ICE figures, noting the administration arrested over 328,000 and deported nearly 327,000 individuals since January 2025.

Shift in enforcement priorities

Immigrants with no criminal record now form the largest group in detention, despite rhetoric targeting “the worst of the worst” criminals. Undocumented status remains a civil infraction, not criminal.

The Trump administration has invalidated protections for many legally residing immigrants, intensifying enforcement.
