Damianou presents Cyprus EU Presidency telecoms priorities

Date:

Three pillars for the Cyprus Presidency Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou attended the EU Telecommunications Council in Brussels on 7 December 2025 and unveiled Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency work programme in the sector.

The programme rests on three core pillars:

  1. Strengthening Europe’s digital capabilities and technological leadership
  2. Boosting cyber resilience and protecting the digital ecosystem – with special emphasis on child online safety
  3. Deepening strategic digital partnerships (“sovereignty and autonomy do not mean isolation”)

Damianou stressed Cyprus’s commitment to deliver tangible progress that directly benefits citizens and businesses.

Council adopts competitiveness conclusions

Ministers approved Council Conclusions on European competitiveness in the Digital Decade, aimed at fostering innovation, simplifying regulation and enhancing digital sovereignty.

A policy debate followed on using digital tools to cut administrative burdens for businesses. Damianou called simplification and digitalisation a “political imperative” for EU resilience and competitiveness.

Bilateral meetings

On the sidelines, Damianou held talks with digital ministers and deputy ministers from Germany, Poland, France and Italy ahead of the Cyprus Presidency starting in early 2026.
