The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín, is beginning another round of diplomatic contacts on the island, with meetings in Cyprus continuing as part of ongoing efforts to sustain dialogue between the two communities.
Holguín arrived on Thursday evening and opens this sequence of engagements today at 11am with a meeting in the north with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The discussion is expected to focus on current positions and the broader atmosphere surrounding the Cyprus issue, forming part of her continued shuttle diplomacy.
Tomorrow at 10am, Holguín will hold talks with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, further extending the Holguín meetings in Cyprus as both sides evaluate next steps under UN guidance.
A joint visit by the two leaders to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) is scheduled for 11 December, followed by a trilateral meeting under Holguín’s guidance, according to UN spokesperson Aleem Siddique. The timing reflects the UN envoy’s intention to maintain structured communication and encourage constructive engagement.
Holguín had previously participated via teleconference in the introductory meeting between Christodoulides and Erhürman last month, shortly after Erhürman’s election as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community. That meeting, hosted by the UN Special Representative near the old Nicosia airport, reopened channels of communication that Holguín is now continuing in person.
