Cyprus–Israel kidney chain saves three lives

Date:

Doctors completed a complex international chain of three living-donor kidney transplants between Cyprus and Israel. Nicosia General Hospital led the effort.

Teams performed the procedures on 4 November 2025. They worked closely with the Cyprus Ministry of Health and Israeli transplant services.

The Cyprus–Israel kidney chain linked Nicosia General Hospital with Beilinson and Hadassah hospitals in Israel:

  • Surgeons flew a kidney from a living donor at Hadassah to Cyprus. The OKYPY transplant team then implanted it in a Cypriot patient.
  • Next, doctors sent a kidney from a living donor in Cyprus to Beilinson. There, surgeons transplanted it into an Israeli patient.
  • Finally, an altruistic living donor at Beilinson gave a kidney. Doctors transferred it to Hadassah and transplanted it into a second Israeli patient.

Because of this teamwork, three patients – one Cypriot and two Israelis – left years of dialysis behind and regained normal lives.

This success showcases the expertise of Cyprus’s only Transplant Clinic. It also proves flawless coordination between Cypriot and Israeli teams, plus the strong skills OKYPY has developed recently.

Today, doctors discharged the Cypriot patient in excellent condition. She now recovers at home with bright prospects.

Moreover, the operation highlights the power of cross-border transplant programmes with neighbours like Israel. It also demonstrates the advanced level of Cyprus’s health system. In recent years, the Nicosia clinic has already carried out seven cross-donor kidney transplants.

OKYPY and the Nicosia General Transplant Clinic warmly thank the Cyprus Ministry of Health, Israel’s National Transplant Centre, and all Israeli teams for their outstanding partnership in saving and improving lives.
