A yellow storm warning is in force from 3am until 5pm on Thursday, with the Meteorology Department expecting strong thunderstorms to affect the island throughout the day.
Storms spreading inland by midday
According to the warning, isolated but strong storms will move across the island in intervals, initially affecting the western, northern and southern coasts in the morning. By midday, the unsettled weather is expected to shift towards the mountains, the interior and the east.
Hail is possible during storms, and winds may strengthen suddenly. Rainfall intensity is forecast to range between 35mm and 55mm per hour.
Cloudy skies, hail risk and shifting winds
Unstable weather conditions continue to affect the region. Today will be mostly cloudy at intervals, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Hail is possible, especially over the mountains and inland areas when storms peak in the afternoon.
Winds will begin light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming south-westerly to north-westerly, and north-easterly on the eastern coast at 3 to 4 Beaufort. However, winds may strengthen sharply during storms. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will reach around 24°C inland and on the western and northern coasts, 26°C on the southern and eastern coasts, and 16°C in the higher mountains.
Evening storms possible along the coast
Tonight will be mostly cloudy at intervals, with isolated showers or a thunderstorm possible, mainly along coastal areas. Winds will remain light and variable at 3 Beaufort, while the sea stays calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will fall to around 12°C inland, 15°C on the coasts and 8°C in the higher mountains.
Friday and weekend outlook
Friday will start mostly clear, though increasing cloud later in the day may bring local showers and an isolated storm, mainly in the mountains and the island’s southern regions.
The weekend will be generally clear, although a brief, isolated shower may occur on Saturday afternoon, particularly in the southern Troodos area.
Temperatures will gradually drop through Saturday to sit close to or slightly below average for the season. Little change is expected on Sunday.
