Concern has grown in recent days over the increased presence of Turkish F-16s over Nicosia, with residents telling SigmaLive they have noticed military aircraft flying over different parts of the capital.
Flights more noticeable near Green Line
According to information obtained by SigmaLive, the aircraft are Turkish F-16s operating from the illegal airport in Tymbou. Their flights have become more noticeable in recent days, particularly in areas close to the Green Line.
The increased sightings of Turkish F-16s have prompted questions among residents about the frequency of the flights over the capital.
Six F-16s deployed in March
Turkey deployed six F-16 fighter jets to the occupied areas on 9 March 2026.
According to information previously provided by the Ministry of Defence, the presence and activity of Turkish fighter jets within the Nicosia FIR is a common practice. This also helps explain the more frequent reports from residents who notice military aircraft in the skies over Cyprus.
Reports from other districts
Reports of fighter jet activity have not been limited to Nicosia.
In recent months, residents in other districts, including Larnaca, have also reported seeing military aircraft.
The Ministry of Defence has indicated that some of these sightings may involve Greek F-16s taking part in military exercises.
