The cost of removing two cars that became stuck in the Larnaca salt lake last Wednesday remains unknown, according to Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras.
He told local media the bill has not yet been sent to the municipality and is expected to arrive on Monday.
The recovery operation began early Thursday morning, when a private company used heavy machinery to extract the two cars. The process proved difficult, as the vehicles’ movement stirred up thick mud, at times breaking the towing strap.
Despite the setbacks, the first car was pulled out around 11:30am, and the second shortly before 2pm.
Deputy mayor Iasonas Iasonides said the car owner told municipal services he had driven into the salt lake in search of a better sunset shot for his camera.
Both vehicles belonged to the same person, who has already been fined €2,000 by the Game and Fauna Service.
According to Iasonides, the recovery company estimated the operation would cost between €5,000 and €8,000- an amount the owner will have to pay.
After being removed, both vehicles were taken to municipal storage facilities, where they will remain impounded until the owner pays for their removal.
