The Larnaca District Court today issued a five-day detention order against a 29-year-old man arrested on Sunday in connection with the case of attempted murder and the arson of four vehicles at a car yard on the Larnaca–Dhekelia road in Pyla on 14 August.
According to police, the 29-year-old, a resident of a Larnaca district village, was arrested under a court warrant by members of the Larnaca CID, with the assistance of other services.
He appeared before the Larnaca District Court today, which, at the request of the police, issued a five-day detention order against him.
Meanwhile, the court also ruled on the police request that five foreign nationals arrested in the same case remain in custody. They were referred last Friday to a direct trial before the Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca, which is scheduled to convene on 29 October.
In a closed-door hearing, the court ordered that the five remain in custody at the Central Prisons until the start of proceedings.
The suspects include a 17-year-old believed to be the gunman who fired at a security guard, and a 23-year-old suspected of torching the vehicles.
The other three are a 17-year-old believed to have driven the getaway car, a 27-year-old accused of delivering the car to the perpetrators, and a 44-year-old inmate at the Central Prisons.
Charges faced by four of the five foreign nationals include conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, attempted murder, arson, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of explosives, and handling stolen goods.
One of the two 17-year-olds faces charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and handling stolen property.
The Larnaca CID continues its investigation into the Pyla attempted murder case.
