The Parliamentary Energy Committee visited the construction site of the Vasilikos LNG terminal on Tuesday, seeking an update on the project’s progress, costs and expected operating date.
Representatives from the Energy Ministry, DEFA, Etyfa and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) took part in the visit.
MPs seek clear project timeline
Energy Committee chairman and DISY MP Nikos Georgiou said the visit aimed to provide MPs with a first-hand assessment of the project, its next steps and the timelines involved.
He said the committee wants clear information on the project’s exact cost and the specific date and year when the Vasilikos terminal will become operational.
Georgiou described the project as strategically important for Cyprus, linking it to energy supply, energy security, lower electricity costs and the competitiveness of the economy.
Electricity supply raises concerns
The committee later visited the Vasilikos Power Station, where it met with the EAC board and director general.
The discussions focused on the authority’s strategic plan and planning for the country’s electricity needs.
Georgiou said electricity adequacy in Cyprus was sending an “SOS” and called for all relevant bodies to coordinate their efforts. He added that the Energy Committee would continue monitoring developments.
He linked efforts to address high electricity costs to the completion of the Vasilikos project, decisions on the electricity interconnector and other energy policy choices.
Etyfa tender process
The committee also sought an update on the Etyfa tender, whose first phase was completed on 9 September.
Asked whether there were candidates for the project, Georgiou said the committee was at Vasilikos to receive information on the process.
He added that an announcement on the candidates is expected, while Etyfa has indicated that it intends to extend the deadline following requests from international companies.
