Giannis Antetokounmpo joins Greece for EuroBasket 2025 in Cyprus

Date:

Greece’s national basketball team will travel to Cyprus with NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo officially included in the squad for the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Group C matches. The tournament, hosted at the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Centre in Limassol, will run from 28 August to 4 September and marks the largest international sporting event ever held on the island.

Antetokounmpo’s inclusion brings enormous excitement to the tournament. Often referred to as the “Greek Freak”, the 29-year-old forward for the Milwaukee Bucks is one of the most dominant players in world basketball. He is a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) (2019, 2020), an NBA Champion (2021), and was named Finals MVP in the same year. Known for his explosive athleticism, versatility, and relentless work ethic, his presence boosts Greece’s hopes of making a deep run in the championship and elevates the international prestige of the EuroBasket tournament in Cyprus.

Following a friendly against France, head coach Vassilis Spanoulis announced his final 12-man squad. In addition to Giannis, the team features key players including his brothers Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo, as well as Kostas Sloukas (Panathinaikos) and Tyler Dorsey (naturalised player from Olympiacos). The lineup also includes captain Kostas Papanikolaou, Olympiacos teammates Giannoulis Larentzakis and Kostas Antetokounmpo, and Panathinaikos players Dinos Mitoglou, Panagiotis Kalaitzakis, Vasilis Toliopoulos, and rising talent Alexandros Samontourov, who recently shone at the Under-20 EuroBasket in Heraklion. Dimitris Katsivelis from AEK rounds out the squad.

Cyprus and Greece are co-hosting Group C of the tournament, and will face each other for the first time in an official FIBA match on Saturday, 30 August at 18:15. Greece’s campaign will begin with a high-profile clash against Italy on Thursday, 28 August at 21:30. The team will then face Georgia (31 August, 15:00), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2 September, 15:00), and close the group stage with a match against Spain (4 September, 21:30)—another basketball powerhouse and tournament favourite.
