Summer holidays in Cyprus mean more than just getaways—they also come with a good book. Local bookstores have seen a noticeable rise in demand, with fiction and self-help titles being clear favourites among adult readers.
Speaking to CNA, Akis Christou, President of the Cyprus Booksellers Association and representative of Soloneion Book Centre, said readers prefer easy-to-digest novels and children’s books during the summer months, often turning to both local and international authors.
Costas Balaouras, Director of Parga Bookstore, added that self-help books are particularly popular, as readers use their free time to relax and reflect. While Greek authors remain favourites, there’s growing interest in international writers too.
Cypriot authors also enjoy steady popularity year-round, not just in summer. Among the most read are Stavros Christodoulou, Nasia Dionysiou, Konstantia Sotiriou, Antonis Georgiou, and Nikos Nikolaou—praised for consistent quality.
Christou noted that readers typically fall into two categories: those who seek new releases regardless of author, and those loyal to their favourites. Bookstores see the most engagement from mothers aged 25–40, who often select children’s books alongside adult literature.
As for current bestsellers, Balaouras highlighted titles like Panthera by Ofilia, The Let Them Method by Mel Robbins, A Dive into Love by Rena Rossi-Zairi, Clear Waters by Evangelia Efstathiou, Red Line by Lena Manta, and Don’t Fear the Wind by Katerina Lygounaki.
Though summer brings a slight rise in sales, the peak book-buying season remains Christmas—when books make ideal, thoughtful gifts for readers of all ages.
