Fresh tensions have emerged in the Denia buffer zone, with local farmers reporting obstacles to carrying out agricultural work on properties near the United Nations-controlled area.
According to information published by the Western Nicosia Newspaper, farmers in the area say they have repeatedly faced interference and difficulties accessing and cultivating their land.
The latest developments come as similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks. Earlier this month, UN peacekeeping officials met with Denia community leaders and farmers to discuss safety and access to agricultural areas ahead of seasonal farming activities.
Farmers consider coordinated action
The situation has caused concern among farmers, with some reportedly considering jointly cultivating their plots as a coordinated response to what they describe as repeated interference.
Reports on Wednesday said farmers remained at the location and continued agricultural work while UN peacekeeping personnel were present. The Denia community leader, Charalambos Alexandrou, said the farmers were insisting on continuing work on their properties.
The latest incident was reported on Wednesday morning, when Greek Cypriot farmers went to fields in the buffer zone to begin agricultural work. Other local reports said they were approached by Turkish soldiers and asked to leave, but continued working with the UN present.
UN contacts with Turkish Cypriot side
The United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus is reportedly in contact with the Turkish Cypriot side as efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
The UN had already been engaging with farmers and local authorities earlier in September over security concerns and challenges relating to access to agricultural land.
Last week, UN Special Representative and UNFICYP chief Khassim Diagne also visited Denia, where he met with the local authority and farmers involved in agricultural activities in the area.
The situation remains ongoing, with discussions continuing on the ground.
