Femicide in Chloraka highlights gender-based violence issue

Date:

The femicide in Chloraka on Sunday, which also resulted in the injury of the victim’s underage child, “highlights in the harshest way the reality of violence against women and domestic violence,” said Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, in a written statement.

She stressed that femicide is the most extreme form of gender-based violence, rooted in harmful gender stereotypes and long-standing power imbalances between men and women, with serious consequences for families and society at large.

“Femicide is a premeditated criminal act, solely the responsibility of the perpetrator, and no condition can justify it,” she noted.

The Commissioner concluded by underlining that protecting the lives and dignity of women is a collective duty. “Zero tolerance must be our standard,” she said.
