Ioannou explains absence from Limassol wildfires

Date:

Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou has addressed questions over his absence from the recent wildfires in the mountainous areas of Limassol.

Speaking on the state broadcaster on Wednesday afternoon, following the conclusion of the Cabinet meeting, Ioannou was asked why he had not been present at the scene.

He explained that he had been abroad for family reasons at the time. Ioannou added that there is no requirement for the Interior Minister to be physically present at wildfire sites, noting that operational management is handled by the relevant emergency services.

The Ioannou wildfires absence comes amid wider public scrutiny over the government’s response to the fires and the coordination of firefighting efforts.
