Yellow weather warning issued for thunderstorms and hail

Date:

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for isolated strong thunderstorms, effective from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Wednesday.

These storms are expected to primarily affect mountainous regions, the interior, and eastern areas. Hail may accompany the thunderstorms, and winds are anticipated to be variable and strengthening.

Rainfall intensity could range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour.

Weather Forecast:

A weak low-pressure system and unstable air mass are influencing the area. From Friday onwards, dust will be present in the atmosphere, with concentrations occasionally increasing.

Initially today, the weather will be mostly clear with locally increased low clouds, especially in coastal areas. By midday and beyond, developing clouds are expected to bring local showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly in mountainous, inland, and eastern regions. Hail may occur during thunderstorms. Winds will mainly be southwesterly to northwesterly, initially light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort), gradually strengthening to strong (4 to 5 Beaufort) in windward coastal areas by the afternoon. The sea will generally be slightly rough, though calm to slightly rough in the south and east during morning hours. Temperatures will rise to around 27°C inland, 26°C on the eastern and southern coasts, 24°C on the western and northern coasts, and 19°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will be mostly clear, with locally increased low clouds, particularly in the western half of the island. Winds will remain mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light (3 Beaufort) inland and in the east, and light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort) in windward coastal areas. The sea will become calm to slightly rough in the east, remaining slightly rough elsewhere. Temperatures will drop to around 16°C inland and on the coasts, and around 9°C in the higher mountains.

On Thursday, most areas will be mainly clear with locally increased clouds, which may bring isolated showers, mainly in mountainous regions during the afternoon. On Friday, the weather will be mainly clear with increased high clouds.

Saturday will remain mainly clear with increased high and gradually medium clouds.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly until Friday, remaining near or slightly below average for the season. However, a noticeable rise in temperature is anticipated on Saturday, bringing values slightly above the average climatic norms.
