Two fires in Nicosia – One injured, dog rescued

Date:

Two separate fire incidents broke out in Nicosia on Sunday, resulting in one injury and significant property damage.

Fire in Lakatamia apartment – Dog rescued

A fire erupted in the living room and balcony of a second-floor apartment in Lakatamia, Nicosia, causing extensive damage. According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the blaze caused severe harm to the balcony and living area, with smoke and heat affecting the rest of the apartment. Fortunately, firefighters managed to rescue a dog from the flames and return it safely to its owners, who were not home during the incident. Firefighters entered the apartment using breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire with water hoses. An investigation is underway in cooperation with the police.

Fire from barbecue – One hospitalised with burns

Earlier that evening, a fire broke out in a rooftop auxiliary structure in the Archangelos area of Nicosia. According to the Fire Service, the fire is believed to have been sparked by a barbecue (φουκού) used for cooking. Two fire engines responded to the call at 18:07 and managed to contain the flames, which caused extensive damage to the interior and equipment of the structure. A resident of the house sustained burns while attempting to extinguish the fire and was transferred to the Emergency Department of Nicosia General Hospital after receiving first aid at the scene.

Fire safety

As Cyprus enters the hot, dry summer months, fire safety becomes increasingly important. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant, especially during outdoor cooking and in homes without fire prevention measures.
