Heavy snowfall in Troodos: Restrictions for vehicles

Due to snowfall in the mountainous areas, the roads from Karvounas to Troodos, Platres to Troodos, and Prodromos to Troodos are open only for four-wheel-drive vehicles or those equipped with anti-skid chains.

According to the Police, there are no reported issues in other areas, particularly on the main roadways.

A weak low-pressure system and a cold air mass are affecting the region, while weak high pressure is expected from Saturday.

Today, the weather will be partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy, with isolated showers and snowfall in the higher mountains. Winds will be blowing from the northwest to northeast, initially light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually strengthening to moderate to strong and temporarily strong, at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be generally rough. The temperature will rise to around 12°C inland, around 15°C on the coast, and around 1°C in the higher mountains, where frost will form locally.

Tonight, there will be locally increased cloud cover, which may bring isolated light showers and possibly snowfall in the highest mountainous areas. Winds will continue to blow mainly from the northwest to northeast, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and locally temporarily moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will become slightly rough to rough. The temperature will drop to around 4°C inland, around 6°C on the coast, and around -4°C in the highest mountains, where frost will prevail locally.

On Friday, the weather in most areas will be mainly clear, though locally increased clouds may occasionally appear, with the possibility of isolated light showers in the mountains.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the weather will be mostly clear, although at times, locally increased cloud cover may be observed.

By Sunday, temperatures will gradually rise noticeably to reach close to the seasonal average.

As of the time of the report’s release, the snow depth was 3 centimetres in Troodos Square and 4 centimetres in Chionistra.
