Leaders agreed on a group of trust-building initiatives, UNSG says

Date:

The leaders agreed on a group of initiatives to build trust, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq said during the Press Briefing at the UN headquarters in New York after the conclusion of the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format in Geneva.

“In Geneva today, the Secretary-General concluded the informal meeting on Cyprus that he convened with the two Cypriot leaders and the guarantor powers of Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom,” Haq noted.

“The Secretary-General said that the discussions were held in a constructive atmosphere, with both sides showing clear commitment to making progress and continuing the dialogue,” he added.

Furthermore, Hag said that “the leaders agreed on a group of initiatives to build trust: opening of four crossing points, demining, creation of a technical committee on youth, initiatives on the environment and climate change—including the impacts on mining areas—solar energy in the buffer zone, and the restoration of cemeteries.”

According to Haq, UN Secretary General also pointed out that the leaders agreed to hold another meeting in the same format at the end of July, as well as to appoint a personal envoy to prepare the next steps.

“The meeting was held under the auspices of the Secretary-General’s Good Offices on the Cyprus issue and as agreed with the two leaders on October 15, 2024,” Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General finally said.
