Gynaecologist misdiagnosed woman who was dying of cancer

Date:

A shocking case of potential medical negligence has been revealed by the newspaper Phileleftheros. According to the report, one doctor told her in March 2024 that she had cervicitis, while another doctor, two months later, diagnosed advanced-stage cancer, at stage three.

The 37-year-old woman sadly passed away this past January, leaving behind a 16-year-old daughter.

As stated in the report, the woman had been visiting a well-known Cypriot gynaecologist at a medical centre for a year. According to allegations made by her relatives, despite her complaints of discomfort, the doctor in question reassured her.

The said doctor had diagnosed an infection and cervicitis. Two months after her last examination, the woman decided to seek a second opinion. She arranged an appointment with another doctor of the same speciality, and that is when everything changed.

Realising that something was wrong, the second doctor immediately referred her for specialised medical tests, which revealed that she had stage three cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, it appears that her condition was irreversible due to the delayed diagnosis. As a result, the 37-year-old passed away in her homeland, where she had travelled.

SigmaLive contacted the lawyer handling the case on behalf of the deceased. Among other things, the lawyer expressed serious concerns regarding the penalties imposed by the Medical Association in such cases. It is noted that a thorough investigation into the matter will begin as soon as the case is officially reported in the deceased woman’s home country. Only then will the CID and the Medical Association officially begin their investigation.

Regarding the penalties imposed by the Medical Association, the lawyer handling the case stated in an interview with SigmaLive that the Association must reassess the way it reviews cases and imposes penalties. If cases like this are confirmed, it should immediately revoke the doctor’s licence to practise.

“We are talking about human lives,” was the lawyer’s message.
