A tense and emotional atmosphere surrounded the Heraklion Courthouse, where a large crowd gathered awaiting the testimonies of a 26-year-old mother and her 44-year-old partner, who stand accused of attempted murder of 3-year-old Angelos. The child remains in critical condition in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of PAGNI, fighting for his life.
The couple arrived at court shortly before 11 a.m., escorted by a heavy police presence. Authorities led them through the back entrance of the courthouse to prevent altercations, as outraged citizens had been outside since early morning, expressing their grief and fury over the case.
Shocking details of the child’s injuries
The 3-year-old boy was rushed to Heraklion University Hospital on Sunday, 26 January 2025, suffering from severe injuries, including a subdural haematoma, bruises, abrasions, and burns inflicted over different periods. Medical professionals immediately recognised that his injuries could not have resulted from an accident, as the mother and stepfather claimed.
According to police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou, even experienced officers handling the case were deeply shaken. “I don’t know if they have ever dealt with a case of such extreme abuse on such a young child. The child is in an awful state, and it is clear that someone is responsible,” she said.
Conflicting accounts and defence strategies
Both the mother and her partner are reportedly blaming each other for the child’s condition. The 44-year-old stepfather denies harming the child, insisting: “I never touched him. His mother is responsible.” He claimed that he repeatedly questioned the 26-year-old mother about the child’s injuries, but she always replied that Angelos had fallen and hurt himself. He also stated that he recorded videos and photos of the child’s injuries on his phone to report the mother but refrained due to threats from her.
His lawyer, Vasilis Noulezas, revealed that the stepfather intends to request a psychiatric evaluation, alleging that he suffers from severe depression, for which he is receiving treatment. Furthermore, he is expected to file a request for a second forensic examination if the initial findings do not fully clarify how the injuries occurred.
Allegations against the mother
The stepfather’s ex-wife defended him in an interview, claiming he intended to report the mother and that he had gathered evidence of the abuse to protect the child. She also accused the 26-year-old mother, alleging that during a phone call, the mother admitted: “I can’t handle him anymore, I’m tired of him. I will give him to his father.”
For her part, the 26-year-old mother claims she was not home when her son suffered his most severe head injuries, stating that she had gone out to buy coffee and returned to find him already hurt.
Serious charges against the accused
The public prosecutor has charged both individuals with attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm, endangering a minor, weapon possession, and illegal firearm storage. Additionally, the 44-year-old stepfather faces charges of drug possession and unlawful storage of personal data related to the child.
As investigations continue, public anger remains high, with many calling for stricter penalties for child abuse in Greece. Meanwhile, Angelos continues his fight for survival in the ICU.
