A live broadcast is planned for the execution of Nidal Hasan, the gunman responsible for a 2009 attack at the Fort Hood military base in Texas that killed 13 people and injured dozens, a US Department of War official has told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the execution by firing squad “will be broadcast live”, adding that further details would follow.
Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist of Palestinian descent and a Muslim, opened fire at the medical centre at Fort Hood on 5 November 2009.
Execution scheduled for December
The US Army has scheduled Hasan’s execution for 3 December at Fort Hood, where the attack took place. President Donald Trump approved the death sentence on 2 October, and the Army subsequently set the execution date.
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said in a video posted on an account associated with the Pentagon on X that the execution would be public.
The planned broadcast would be an unprecedented step in the United States. Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 after a military jury found him guilty in connection with the attack, which killed 13 people and injured 32 others.
Secretary Hegseth was asked about the execution of Nidal Hasan: "No-brainer—execution by firing squad… Of course we’re doing it at Fort Hood. We’re going to do it at 1 o’clock—which is when he did it. It’s going to be soldiers with rifles executing the firing squad."
