A detainee death in Cyprus is under investigation after a 59-year-old man died at the Cardiology Ward of Larnaca General Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment while under police guard.

The man, Panikos Kalaintzis, 59, from Paphos, had been in police custody since 11 March 2026 to assist investigations into a case involving the alleged obtaining of credit by false representations.

Kalaintzis was arrested on 11 March under a court warrant and was transferred the same day to Larnaca General Hospital due to health problems. He remained hospitalised under police guard.

On 12 March, the Larnaca District Court, which convened at the hospital, issued a six-day detention order.

Police investigation ongoing

The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating the causes of the detainee death in Cyprus, while examinations are continuing to determine the exact circumstances.
