The Paphos District Court on Sunday extended the detention of the 58-year-old suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Alexandros Antoniou by another eight days.
The suspect initially refused to cooperate with investigators. During interrogation, however, he confessed to inflicting the fatal wounds. He claimed no premeditation and described the stabbing outside a Konia kiosk as happening “in a bad moment”.
His defence lawyers did not contest the police request for extended remand. The prosecution argued the extension was justified, noting the first detention period had already been used productively.
The court found reasonable suspicion of premeditated murder. Investigations continue.
Police have taken 50 statements and plan to collect at least another 50.
Background of the case
Antoniou, 26, from Paphos, suffered multiple stab wounds during a confrontation with the 58-year-old, father of his ex-girlfriend, on 19 November 2025 outside a kiosk in Konia, Paphos.
He was rushed to Paphos General Hospital but transferred that evening to a private Limassol clinic due to his critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries at 02:44 a.m. on 22 November 2025.
The incident followed a harassment complaint filed the same day by the 26-year-old’s ex-girlfriend, alleging he slashed her car tires the previous night.
Police deny any delay in responding to the report and insist they acted immediately.
Knife recovery
On Thursday 27 November, officers recovered a knife from a remote area in Tsada near a wild locust tree, based on a tip-off. They believe it was the murder weapon and sent it for forensic testing.
The suspect reportedly indicated the location.
Funeral and public response
Antoniou’s funeral took place on Tuesday 25 November. Apollon Limassol FC, where he was a fan, issued condolences.
The case has shocked Paphos, with police vowing a thorough investigation.
