19 year old driver arrested after friend injured in Larnaca

Date:

A 19-year-old driver was arrested in Larnaca shortly after 6pm today, following a serious incident in which he allegedly hit his friend with a car in a car park near Mackenzie beach.

According to police, the teenager was arrested under a court warrant to assist ongoing investigations into a case involving grievous bodily harm and reckless or negligent acts.

The incident occurred at around 11:30pm on Monday, 18 August. Preliminary information suggests the 19-year-old was driving his car in a parking area in Mackenzie when, under circumstances still under investigation, he struck his friend — also aged 19 — who was walking nearby on foot.

Reports indicate the two teens had earlier been at a nearby restaurant with other friends and were leaving the area at the time of the incident.

The injured teen suffered serious head trauma. He was initially transported to Larnaca General Hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to Nicosia General Hospital. His condition is described by doctors as critical.

The driver underwent a preliminary breathalyser test, which returned a zero reading. A narcotest was also conducted, with a negative result.

The case is now under investigation by the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID), based on witness statements and evidence collected so far.
