Occupied Cyprus reacts to Turkish flag burning at Easter bonfires

Strong reactions after Easter incidents

The flag-burning incident involving the destruction of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot flags during Easter “lambratzies” (bonfires) has triggered strong political reactions and renewed debate over intercommunal relations on the island.

The “president” of the “parliament” of the Turkish Cypriot administration, Ziya Öztürkler, described the act as an “unacceptable provocation”, saying it undermines efforts toward peace and coexistence in Cyprus.

He argued that such actions damage trust between communities and reflect what he described as rising extremism.

Öztürkler: “Provocation undermines peace”

Commenting on the flag-burning incident, Öztürkler said the burning of flags and an image of former Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar during Easter bonfires amounted to “fanaticism”.

He warned that escalating tensions would harm prospects for coexistence, adding that “there is no alternative to peace” and that hate speech and violence are damaging for both sides of the island.

Öztürklər also criticised statements from Greek Cypriot leadership regarding the unresolved Cyprus issue, claiming they reflected a unilateral stance and increased mistrust.

Erhürman condemns flag burning Cyprus incident

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman also condemned the flag burning Cyprus incident, describing it as a “lack of culture” and an unacceptable act carried out by “irresponsible individuals”.

He said the burning of flags does not cause material damage to symbols themselves but reflects negatively on those who carry out such acts.

Erhürman added that such incidents should be viewed as harmful to intercommunal relations and criticised what he described as repeated provocations.

Wider political tensions on the island

The incident comes amid ongoing political sensitivity in Cyprus, with both sides frequently exchanging criticism over symbolism, rhetoric and historical grievances.

Öztürkler reiterated the position that the Turkish military presence on the island remains necessary for security, while also stressing that stability depends on maintaining peace between communities.

Erhürman, meanwhile, urged restraint and warned against actions that could further inflame tensions, calling for responsibility from all political leaders.
