Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of deliberately buying time in order to continue its invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory.
His remarks come just a day after former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly discussed the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking via social media, Zelensky stated:
“It’s clear that Russia is trying to win time to continue its war and occupation.”
While reiterating that a negotiated end to the war is necessary, Zelensky stressed the importance of having clear and realistic proposals on the table.
“The war must end at the negotiating table,” he said. “Ukraine is ready for any effective peace formula. But if Russia continues to demand unrealistic terms and sabotages outcomes, there must be firm consequences.”
Zelensky pushes for stronger sanctions
Zelensky also called for greater international pressure, particularly through targeted sanctions, and expressed appreciation for countries that are holding Russian actors accountable:
“Sanctions matter, and I’m grateful to everyone who makes them tangible for the perpetrators of war.”
He also confirmed a recent discussion with Finnish President Alexander Stubb regarding the peace process
Trump claims progress, but avoids new sanctions
Trump, who announced that Russia and Ukraine would soon begin ceasefire talks, told reporters that the process would take time. However, he also said he is not prepared to follow Europe in imposing new sanctions on Moscow.
According to Trump, after his call with Putin, he briefed Zelensky and the leaders of France, Italy, Germany, Finland, and the EU via group phone call.
