Amid a flood of images and posts on social media showing the outpouring of support for fire-stricken communities, one effort stood out for its scale and grassroots energy: the youth wing of DISY (NEDISY) carried out all-day food and supply distributions to families affected by the deadly wildfires in mountainous Limassol.
From early Thursday morning, volunteers from NEDISY were present on the ground, collecting and delivering food, water, medical supplies, and essential goods to impacted communities. Working quietly but effectively, the teams made their way into affected villages- among them was former Lofou community leader Nikos Spyrou, who joined the initiative in person.
A collection and coordination centre was also established at the NEDISY offices in Limassol, serving as a base for both volunteers and community members seeking to contribute.
Political leadership from DISY made a visible show of support for the relief efforts. Visiting the distribution point were:
– Annita Demetriou, President of DISY
– Efthymios Diplaros, Deputy President
– MPs Fotini Tsiridou and Nikos Sykas
– District Secretary Costas Yiallouros
– and several other party officials and staff
While the political presence was noted, organisers kept the focus on the solidarity and direct assistance being offered to displaced families and vulnerable individuals. The party’s youth branch played a key operational role in both logistics and ground-level delivery.
As Cyprus enters the recovery phase, initiatives like this continue to demonstrate the power of volunteerism and local coordination. In the face of devastation, it is this kind of immediate, practical support- whether organised by civic groups, political movements, or individual citizens- that makes a tangible difference.
