The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and hail, with the alert in force from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The warning covers much of the island, with the most intense weather expected in the mountainous and inland regions.
Rain, thunder, and hail expected throughout the day
An area of weak low pressure continues to affect Cyprus, bringing unsettled conditions. The weather will be partly to mostly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms likely during the morning over western and northern areas, spreading to other regions as the day progresses.
Hail is possible in thunderstorms, and in some inland and mountain areas, the phenomena may be intense, particularly after midday. Winds will start out variable and light, around 3 Beaufort, becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures will rise to around 25°C inland and along the coast, and 15°C in the higher mountains.
Showers continuing overnight and through the weekend
Tonight, skies will remain mostly cloudy, with scattered showers and isolated storms, especially in coastal regions. Winds will be mainly northwesterly to northeasterly, weak at 3 Beaufort, while the sea will stay calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will fall to around 13°C inland, 15°C on the coasts, and 7°C in the mountains.
The unsettled pattern will persist into Thursday and Friday, with occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms, again bringing possible hail and locally intense weather, mainly in the afternoon. By Saturday, cloud cover will increase at times with the chance of isolated mountain showers.
Temperatures are forecast to drop noticeably by the weekend, falling below the seasonal average.
