Yellow weather warning for severe conditions across Cyprus

Date:

Cyprus’ Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for severe weather, as a frontal system arrives tonight and changes conditions across the island. Forecasters say the weather will shift overnight, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected mainly after midnight, and a chance of hail. Dust will remain in the atmosphere until tomorrow morning, before it gradually clears.

Conditions This Afternoon

This afternoon, the weather turns partly to mostly cloudy, and isolated showers or a brief thunderstorm may develop, mainly in mountainous areas and the north. Winds in the west and northwest blow north-westerly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, while elsewhere they blow mainly north-easterly to south-easterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea stays slight in the south and east, but slight to rough in the west and north.

Weather Tonight

Tonight, local showers and isolated thunderstorms spread from the west and north to the rest of Cyprus, and hail may fall during storms. Winds blow mainly north-westerly at 4 Beaufort, and temporarily reach 4 to 5 Beaufort along the coast, while storm activity can shift and strengthen wind conditions. The sea remains slight to rough in the west, southwest and north, and up to slight in the southeast and east. Temperatures drop to 14°C inland, 15°C on the coasts and 7°C in the highest mountains.

Tomorrow: Cooler and Unstable

Tomorrow, skies become mostly cloudy at intervals, and local showers and isolated thunderstorms develop. In the morning, activity focuses mainly in the east and north, while from midday storms move mainly to the mountains, the south and the east, with possible activity inland. Hail may fall in storms. Winds blow south-westerly to north-westerly at 4 to 5 Beaufort, and briefly reach 5 Beaufort on exposed coasts. The sea stays up to slight in the east, but slight to rough elsewhere. Temperatures fall noticeably to around 21°C inland, 22°C on the coasts and 11°C in the highest mountains.

Mid-Week Weather Outlook

On Wednesday and Thursday, the weather remains partly to mostly cloudy, and isolated showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms may develop, especially after midday. On Friday, cloud cover increases at times. Temperatures rise gradually until Friday, and level off near or slightly above the seasonal average.
